Nestled in the heart of northern lower Michigan, Bakers Green Acres is a small, sustainable family farm dedicated to fostering community and cultivating healthy, life-giving food. At the core of our farm’s mission is a commitment to natural systems that nourish the soil, protect the environment, and strengthen relationships within our local community.
Our Philosophy
Pasture is the foundation of our farming, harnessing the power of sunshine, soil, and fresh air to raise healthier, happier animals. Our chickens, pigs, turkeys, dairy cows, and other livestock thrive in their natural environments, living the lives they were meant to live. This approach not only enhances ecological resilience but also results in the best-tasting, highest-quality meat possible. We ensure freshness by providing meats as close to processing and fresh-frozen as possible.
Our Journey
Our farming adventure began on 13 arid acres in Montana, where we grew our own food and cared for a menagerie of animals, including chickens, turkeys, goats, rabbits, pigs, and cattle. The name “Green Acres” started as a humorous nod to the old TV show, reflecting our novice approach to farming. Over time, we embraced natural farming methods, choosing sustainability over chemicals. When we moved to Michigan, we immersed ourselves in the local sustainable food movement, growing our family’s involvement in every aspect of farm life.
Our Farm in Action
Every family member plays a role in our farm’s operation, from feeding hens and gathering eggs to managing broiler chickens, building fences, and processing garden produce. Our animals are raised on pasture as much as possible, supplemented with Stone House Bread organic sourdough, a bakery that shares our commitment to sustainability and natural ingredients. This partnership allows us to provide our animals, especially our heritage Mangalitsa pigs, with a nutrient-dense grain supplement. The combination of pasture and the best organic sourdough bread promotes animal health and enhances the flavor and nutritional quality of their meat, which is rich in vitamins E and D, Omega-3 fatty acids, and free of MSG and synthetic nitrates.
Our Vision
At Bakers Green Acres, we aim to create a space where our children can grow and play freely, surrounded by chemical-free fields and gardens. We have developed our own recipes for curing and sausage-making to ensure our products are as natural and wholesome as possible. Our collaboration with Stone House Bread not only benefits our animals but also strengthens the community connections that are so vital to our mission.
We invite individuals and families who value superior quality, healthful food to partner with us in this journey. Together, we can nourish our bodies, our communities, and the land we all share.
